"Rex" - Paralympic Runner Character

This design was for a playable character made for my Game Design senior project, Rushdown, a competitive, free running freeze tag multiplayer game set in the future. Named Rex for his regal and king-like design, this was a character that I wanted to stand out for his flashy visuals. I have a fascination for prosthetics, and paralympic runners' prosthetic legs have mechanics that I find really fun to study. I wanted to design his legs and outfit in a way that made him feel royal, yet grounded.

Rex's first design was meant to give him a sound or music theme and fitting him in biker gear. This idea was quickly scrapped.

Rex's second design, experimenting with digital prosthetics and circuit board clothing. Pushing some of his royal motifs with a crown hair band and advertisements littering his body were played with.

Further studies of prosthetics as well as color guides began being developed.

I started experimenting with different faces and hairs, wanting to give him more personality seen in his eyes through his transparent visor.

The next design was keeping his visor while giving him a more royal personality and outfit. I wanted him to feel like he takes up a lot of space with his clothing and has a primary color.

These orthographic images presented Rex's final design that was handed off to our 3D modeler to create in-game. Sadly, due to scope, Rex never reached the final stage of development.
